(Room 330111, Bainian Building, National Chengchi University

General Descriptions:Ethnic Chinese has a long-time connection with the Southeast Asia historically, it can be traced back to the Song and Tang Dynasty, when the Chinese from Fujian (Hokkien) and Yue (Cantonese) began their voyages across the ocean towards Malay Archipelago/Nusantara and Mainland Southeast Asia. During the late Qing Dynasty, the Opium War, Taiping Rebellion and years of droughts had brought havoc, causing people to move south had grown on a large scale, moving through British occupied Hong Kong to Southeast Asia, and settling down there to survive. Since a long time, Southeast Asia had been included as one part of the tributary system of Chinese empires, and the local ethnic Chinese had been considered as overseas Chinese, which was resulted from the “Core-Periphery” understanding that the cultures of the local ethnic Chinese were only the one-way extension and radiation from China, neglecting the influences from other local cultures. However, the perspective mentioned above has been out of touch with realities. After the end of the Second World War, local Chinese had been participating in the waves of the independence movement and decolonization actively. They are experiencing the plurality and co-living with other ethnics and cultures, producing their own experience of subjectivity. The Research Center of Chinese Cultural Subjectivity is planning to hold “International Forum on Ethnic Chinese Cultures in Southeast Asia: Contexts and Prospects,” we hope to learn of the various perspectives concerning how the Chinese cultures grown in different soils from the Southeast Asian areas. We hence purpose the following sub-titles for the forum:

1. Experiences in inter-ethnic relations of Ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia (Including Social Studies, History)
2. Religions of Ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia (Including Religion that Ethnic Chinese believe in)
3. Intercultural Perspectives of Ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia (Including Arts, Popular Cultures, and Globalization)
