講題：Ancient Chinese Capital City Names and the Change from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese
講者：Christopher I. Beckwith （白桂思）／Distinguished Professor, Indiana University
Traditional Old and Middle Chinese reconstruction is based on a medieval Chinese system of tones, rhymes, and other categories, but the languages of the many Central Eurasian neighbors of ancient and medieval China are neglected. Recently, some linguists have begun working on ancient and medieval foreign transcriptions and loanwords both to and from Chinese.
Among these materials, the ancient Chinese capital city names Hsien-yang 陽 (Xiányáng), Loyang 洛陽 (Luòyáng), and Han-tan 邯鄲 (Hándān) are blessed by having Central Eurasian segmental transcriptions or historical connections as well as Chinese data. Moreover, relatives of these city names are recorded in ancient or medieval western languages. Working in both directions establishes the names’ ancient forms and also opens a new methodological path to a scientific reconstruction of Old Chinese and the radical changes in late Antiquity which made it Middle Chinese.
